The SoCal-based band Sun Room lit up the Ogden Theatre last week, bringing their signature rock and sunshine energy to Denver. Comprised of Luke Asgian on lead vocals and guitar, Ashton Minnich on guitar, Max Pinamonti on bass, and Thomas Rhodes on drums, the band supported Dayglow on his self-titled tour this fall. Denver was their last stop on the tour, and the band made sure to bring their best to the show that night.
Having seen Sun Room in concert a few times before, it was exciting to witness the evolution of their sound and how the band has embraced a new twist on their signature style. The band has just dropped their new EP Can’t Explain, showcasing a grunge-infused rock sound that distinguishes it from their earlier releases. Even so, bits of their original sun-soaked surf rock still peek through and are carried throughout their music.
The band opened with “Just Yesterday,” a groovy tune that whisked us away to the nearest beach, allowing us to forget that we were in a landlocked state. The melodic bass lines and raspy vocals blended seamlessly to create a sound that was both vibrant and reminiscent of days by the ocean. In contrast, the band then played “Get Me Outta New York City,” a newer release that highlighted the more rock side of their sound. This song showcased a true grittiness that hadn’t been as prominent in their earlier work. It’s evident that the band drew inspiration from iconic rock bands like The Ramones while experimenting with their new sound, which I truly respect.
Despite a limited set, they were still able to have a good mix between some of their older music while debuting newer songs. They followed with “Sunset Garage”, a more romantic and softer song from their discography, making it a sweet addition to their set. With lights reflecting the warmth exuded by the band, flashing and pulsing in shades of red, the atmosphere contributed to the overall chill California vibe they aimed to create. They then moved into one of their most well-known songs, “Sol Del Sur,” which features a catchy melody, twangy guitar riffs, and an infectious rhythm that perfectly captures the essence of surf rock.
Sun Room effortlessly brings that local hometown band energy to larger venues, making it easy for everyone in the room to groove along and connect with their music. As a native Californian, their music has always reminded me of home, evoking a subtle sense of nostalgia throughout their set. I’m really excited to see what Sun Room does next and how they continue to evolve their sound, as it’s clear they have yet to show us all they’ve got. If you have the opportunity of catching a Sun Room show, I’d highly recommend it!
