Pearl Charles Dreams Through Songs with Fans at Sold Out London Show

It’s finally stopped raining for London, at least for the moment, and this might be related to LA-based Pearl Charles touching down and bringing the Californian air with her. This is her second sold out London show this year alone, and there were plenty of die-hard fans there ready to celebrate. Blending sixties and seventies rock with poppy riffs, Charles’s music transports you back to another time, when we discovered music through the radio and not through viral TikTok sounds.

The show was opened with a support slot by band member Michael Rault, who played a mostly-solo set (he was joined by Charles and the band for his final songs) that brought the energy up ready for the main gig.

Hailing from Joshua Tree, in the wilds of the California desert just outside Los Angeles, Charles brought her seventies desert rock glamour and elegance to one of London’s most loved grassroots music venues, Omeara. Fantastical and otherworldly, she steps onto the stage in a fringed white two piece – something Bianca Jagger would like to get her hands on.

She’s got a natural stage presence, commanding the room before even playing her first chord. The crowd is captivated by her, the sold out venue hushed and focused as her dreamy voice captivates everyone. She’s comfortable and confident on stage, and it’s obvious that she’s been playing and writing music since she was very young (five years old, to be exact), and that through her music she’s found a way to develop her sense of self.

She starts the sold out show with fan favourites tracks, with ‘Sleepless Dreamer (the title track from her first album released in 2018), ‘Sweet Sunshine Wine and ‘Slipping Away setting the tone for the rest of the night. Even the way she sways as she plays makes you feel like she’s stepped straight out of the seventies, her sun-drenched folk rock taking you back in time.

The fans are pressed up right against the stage, meaning that the sold out night is as intimate a show as it can be. Despite how big or small the show is, listening to Pearl Charles live feels like she’s playing just for you, like she’s crafted each song with you in mind. Her lyrics cover everything from having a blast in the desert and late night love affairs to her journey to discovering her truest self, so there really is something for everyone at tonight’s show.

We dream through songs from both her first and second records, before getting to hear a  recently released track, ‘Does This Song Sound Familiar?’, cracking a pun to the crowd as she announced it. To answer her question, the crowd sang every word back to her passionately, like they felt she wrote each lyric for them individually.

The set list is a mix of music from her 2018 and 2021 albums and new music yet to come, providing an exciting sneak peak into what her 2025 album release has in store for us. She treated us to ‘Imposter’, ‘What I Need and the crowd were particularly excited for a new one titled ‘In The Middle of the Night’. She switches effortlessly from playing guitar to keys, almost dancing as she sits down to play. We’re transported to Joshua Tree as Charles takes us into her world; you’d forget it was October in London outside as the room is filled with a seventies Californian energy.

She was determined to end on a high note, which is impressive considering that the whole show was full of vivid and colourful energy. The penultimate track was another new one, ‘Smoke in the Limousine, before she ended the night with her most loved track, ‘Only For Tonightfrom her album ‘Magic Mirror’, an eclectic seventies daydream made audible. As her most listened to track (to date, anyway!), she knew that this was the one people were waiting for. The crowd sang the lyrics back with raucous enthusiasm, both excited to hear the ultimate fan favourite song live, but clearly sad that this signalled the end of the gig.

With a new album, ‘Desert Queen’, coming next spring, more Pearl Charles music is on the horizon, and we couldn’t be more excited.
