Sorry’s Final Night Of Tour At The Electric Ballroom

Bookmarked post

It’s scorching in London. The first days of summer are here and everything’s looking up. Most of the city’s population are in a park somewhere, enjoying their pints and getting sunburnt, while indie rock band Sorry’s London-based fans are queuing up for the last night of their UK and Ireland tour.

The band from north London, comprised of Asha Lorenz, Louis O’Bryen, Lincoln Barrett, Campbell Baum and Marco Pini, have been up and down the country, from Bristol to Manchester and Glasgow to Birmingham, with a quick stop in Ireland for a Dublin show. It’s been a whirlwind ten days, but tonight is their final show.

Sorry

Even though the weather outside was glorious, the room was filling up already when the first supporting act Jaso (stage name of Jason Maurice) took to the stage. The next supporting act, RIP Magic was led by Marco Pini, who is part of Sorry – performing two sets in a row is quite the feat. Despite not having any tracks on any streaming services yet, many in the crowd were familiar with their songs.

At 9:20, Sorry took to the stage, all of them wearing masks over their faces. They dived straight into ‘Jive’ and ‘Jetplane’, which, despite only having been released last month, is sung along to by the front row like they were born knowing the lyrics.

They bring out a dancer for a song, who demands the audience’s attention, and continue with ‘Right Round The Clock’, ‘Key To The City’ and ‘Candle’. The set list is a mix between the band’s two albums, 2020’s ‘925’ and 2022’s ‘Anywhere But Here’, and their mixtapes, as well as some new material from an upcoming record that they teased would be released soon. We’re treated to songs including ‘Let The Lights On’, ‘Echoes’ and ‘Screaming in the Rain Again’ in the middle of the set, lead singer Lorenz’s delicate vocals providing a counterweight to the raw melodies, where indie rock fuses with electronic elements.

Sorry

In between many of the songs, they play clips of vignettes, each one a comment on the subject matter of the next song. It’s a unique feature of Sorry shows – and the crowd loves it. Some fans, who I imagine have been to several shows on this tour, mouth the words to the vignettes like they’re lyrics to Sorry’s songs. Later on in the set, the band announce that they’re about to play some brand new songs from the record that they’ve just finished working on, which goes down a treat with the crowd. These new tracks are full of energy, and despite not knowing the lyrics, the crowd get into them just as much as their old favourites.

Sorry

The energy keeps building and building inside Camden’s Electric Ballroom, and we end the main set with ‘Snakes’, ‘Cigarette Packet’, ‘Into The Dark’ and a fan favourite released last October, ‘Waxwing’. The crowd eagerly sing the first few lines back to Lorenz, ‘You’re my wild love / You’ve got wild ideas / You’re in my wild dreams / You got that wild heart’ almost drowning her vocals out.

Sorry

For the encore, the band play ‘Ode To Boy’ and ‘Showgirl’ before finishing with one of their biggest tracks ever ‘Starstruck’, which, when you combine the single and album versions, has over fifteen million plays on Spotify alone. It’s a spectacular end to the show and the night ends on a high.

As the crowd filters out onto the warm and hazy streets of Camden, there is already discussion amongst them of the next Sorry show they’ll be attending. The band are playing Latitude Festival and supporting The Maccabees this summer, so the fans won’t have to wait too long, and we can only hope the new record comes sooner rather than later.
