Clairo Hypnotizes Mesa on Headlining CharmTour

Bookmarked post

On a blistering October evening in Arizona, Clairo graced the stage at Mesa Amphitheatre as she continues making her way across North America on her CharmTour. Even when faced with the daunting task of standing for hours at an outdoor venue on a nearly 100 degree night, the local fan base devoted to the soft spoken indie-pop star turned out from all corners of the desert with smiles on their faces and hands over their hearts. Joined on tour by a full band, the 26 year old singer devoutly wore her heart on her sleeve as she delivered her signature gentle, charming vocals.

Even with the tender touch of restraint that Clairo maintains within her singing, her voice quickly sliced through the warm air as she opened the set with the lighthearted melodies of “Nomad”. For the slightly overheated crowd, the first note was met with gratitude for the immediate wave of chills that it sent down everyone’s spines.

It was the mark of a performance that was certain to feel both intimate and expansive simultaneously, taking the audience on a journey through her discography with a setlist that balanced vulnerability and playfulness. This was quickly proven right as she serenaded us with back to back renditions of “Second Nature”, “Thank You”, and “Softly”, all of which gradually encouraged more and more of the crowd to lightly sway and sing along all around the amphitheatre.

As a long time fan of Clairo’s music, it was an absolute treat to see that some of her first releases like “Flaming Hot Cheetos” and “How – demo” made it onto the setlist. Having waited not so patiently for their time to shine, I’ll admit that I let out a loud gasp upon hearing the first notes of “Flaming Hot Cheetos”, much to the fear of my friends who had thought something terrible had happened. This paled in comparison to the alleged frantic sprint, as described to me later by my friend, I made towards an open corner of the barricade to experience the song in all of its glory. From my perspective, it felt more akin to the way cartoon characters float across the air at the scent of a freshly baked pie on a windowsill.

Clairo’s performances are hypnotizing to an endless extent, pulling you deeper and deeper into her orbit before you can even realize what’s happening.

The ethereal performances of “Bambi” and “Terrapin” that followed felt like the perfect moment to run out of the pit to grab a water bottle, as the heat was still tangible for everyone in the crowd, even midway through the night. This became very apparent soon after, as a handful of different people fainted or collapsed under the pressure of hours of outdoor heat. Jumping into a role as caretaker, Clairo quickly called attention to what was happening and paused her performance to encourage security and venue staff to distribute free water bottles across the pit, much to our appreciation.

One of the most memorable moments of the night came during an impromptu performance of “Sinking.” In a spontaneous barter with a fan, Clairo agreed to play the song in exchange for him doing a backflip onstage. While he wasn’t quite able to stick the landing, Clairo still held up her end of the deal, perfectly encapsulating the laid back and good natured atmosphere she cultivates at her shows. As the night came to a close, Clairo devoted herself to leaving us on a high note with stunning deliveries of fan-favorite tracks “Amoeba”, “Bags”, and “Sexy to Someone”. The overall setlist took us on the journey from her earliest works to the present, showcasing her growth as an artist while retaining the authenticity that endeared her to her fans in the first place. The result was a concert that felt less like a performance and more like a conversation between Clairo and the crowd—a night of shared emotions, music, and memorable moments.
